A Lantern in the Dark

My seasonal small-group program, A Lantern in the Dark, returns for Winter/Spring 2025!

What is A Lantern In the Dark?

This 12-week journey guides you to finally get going on the book you've wanted to write but always felt too busy or intimidated. Week by week, using prompts, visualizations, activities and discussion, we cultivate the courage to get words on the page.

After editing hundreds of novels, and having written nine books of my own, I've come to recognize that the secret ingredient to writing a book is finding the bravery to begin and the self-commitment to keep going.

This group is NOT exclusive to novelists (memoir, cookbook… a new play anyone?). Nor is it solely for novices, but it is focused on beginning something new. If you're in need of healing your relationship to writing or just looking for a cozy community with accountability and guidance, to explore a writing project that feels particularly uncertain and new, this is the space for you. We keep the group small and intimate so that we can build trust and so that every individual gets the support they and their work deserve

Writing a book is hard: luckily, you don't have to do it alone. Let this program be a light to guide you through the darkness.

Inside A Lantern In The Dark:

  • Let Go

We begin at the end, by saying goodbye to all that’s holding us back. We use exercises to drop the baggage and step into the version of your life where this book is possible.

  • Get Inspired

You don’t have to just sit around and hope the muse strikes. Let’s cultivate strategies for channeling inspiration and making space for your concept to take shape.

  • Ideate

One of my favorite parts of the process is BRAINSTORMING! You’ll get “fun homework” to help you explore your ideas and elaborate on your vision for the book.

  • Build a Roadmap

I’m a big believer that a little bit of structure can go a long way. Let’s demystify outlining and create a map so that when you feel lost, you can always find your way back.

  • Commit

The single most important action you must take is putting your butt in the chair—and words on the page. Rather than a schedule, we’ll look at creating a functional rhythm.

  • Live a Little

Writing a book is hard. It can also be joyful, magical, and irreverent. Let’s learn to take ourselves less seriously, ask for help, celebrate, and surrender to the flow.

This 12-Week Program Includes:
